Panel(s) of the Week: not from this week’s issues, but I did JUST find out about Karl Kerschl’s The Abominable Charles Christopher which manages to be sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but always endearing and beautifully drawn.

It’s getting warm (kinda… right?). I want to go see the tigers at the zoo.

Special Icelandic Folklore Edition

So a friend of mine recently linked me to a Slate article about how, in their time of economic crisis, the Icelandic people are looking toward their old friends and guardians, The Elves. This is not a joke. How do I know this? Because YEARS ago I saw a great documentary about Iceland and its people that made me fall in love with each and every one of them for believing crazy shit like that. It’s not just elves, it’s also ghosts and monsters and all sorts of awesome stuff that has been unfortunately beaten out of most our imaginations. I CANNOT for the life of me remember the name of this documentary, though, and despite my skills with Teh Internets, I cannot find it. I did find a good looking doc specifically about the Huldufolk (that’s the elves). Also found a not so good looking one. I found a downloadable comic book on “the two nations inhabiting Iceland” too! I even accidentally found out about a documentary about punk rock in Iceland in 1982 which i now really want to see. If someone could actually find the one i’m looking for, I will totally make you cookies or brownies or whatever it is that you find to be a just reward. Here’s the only clues I can give you: It’s well produced. There is an interview early on in the film with a classroom full of kids and they all speak about how they saw a monster outside the window one day. There’s an interview with one of Iceland’s World’s Strongest Man competitors (yknow, one of the Magnuses) where he talks about how the elves help him lift things. Pretty sure there’s an interview with a priest at some point too…….
